South Luangwa National Park is one of the great remaining unspoiled regions of Africa and regarded as the birth and home to walking safaris, game drives(morning and night drives) . The National Park, which is Zambia’s premier wildlife destination it is 9,050 sq.km in size. South Luangwa is dry woodland, watered by the meandering Luangwa River and its many oxbow lakes. The dominant tree is the mopane, but stately baobabs also dot the landscape here and there. In the dry season, most plants and trees seem to shrivel up and wildlife congregates around watering holes, allowing excellent viewing.

Wildlife in the South Luangwa National Park

The Luangwa Valley is home to abundant wildlife, and it is one of Africa’s prime wildlife sanctuaries, with concentrations and varieties of game and birdlife that have made it world famous such as elephants, buffalos, leopards, lions, giraffe, hippos etc. There are over 400 birds’ species, around 100 mammal species and over 2000 types of plants.

The Park is one of the few national parks that allows night safaris. The activity is done half day and night and it is the best time to search and spot nocturnal animals (animals that are active in the night) such as Leopards, Lions, Hyenas porcupine, civet, genet, owls etc. It also offers a rare glimpse of predator hunt and kill.

The Local people

Alongside the beautiful scenery is also a beautiful culture. The people of Luangwa Valley (Zambia) are kind and friendly and will welcome travelers with warmth and genuine hospitality. The local people are also some of the best guides in the entire country, and their passion for sharing their knowledge while working in these camps, which can be incredibly remote, makes the safari experience that much richer and more memorable.
